Growing up, my family loved comfort foods. And one of our favorites was the classic dish known as Cottage Pie. Today, I’m excited to share with you my go-to recipe for this delicious meal.
Classic Cottage Pie Recipe
Cottage Pie is a British dish that’s made up of layering minced beef with vegetables, topping it with mashed potatoes and baking it until it’s golden brown. Here’s how to make it:
Ingredients for Meat Filling
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 carrot, peeled and chopped
- 1 celery stalk, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 beef bouillon cube
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Ingredients for Mashed Potato Topping
- 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 1/2 cup milk
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, carrot, celery and garlic and cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add in the ground beef and cook until browned, about 8 minutes. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
- Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce and beef bouillon cube. Pour in the water and sprinkle in the salt and black pepper. Stir everything together and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes.
- While the meat filling is simmering, make the mashed potato topping. Place the potatoes in a large pot of salted boiling water and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain the water and mash the potatoes with the milk, butter, salt, and black pepper until smooth.
- Transfer the meat filling to a large casserole dish. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top of the filling, making sure to cover it completely.
- Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese on top of the mashed potatoes.
- Bake the Cottage Pie in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the mashed potatoes are golden brown.
- Remove from oven and let it cool before serving. Enjoy!
