Cabbage Bredie, Cape Town Style!!!

This traditional Cape Town dish is a must-try for anyone looking to spice up their mealtime routine. The combination of tender beef, hearty cabbage, and aromatic spices creates a dish that is simply divine. Here’s what you will need to get started on this fantastic recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 lbs stewing beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 green pepper, chopped
  • 1 cabbage, chopped
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion and garlic and sauté for about 2 minutes or until the onion is soft.
  3. Add the green pepper and continue to sauté for another 2 minutes.
  4. Add the beef to the pot and cook until browned.
  5. Add the cabbage, beef broth, sugar, cinnamon, turmeric, salt, and pepper to the pot.
  6. Bring everything to a boil, then reduce the heat to low.
  7. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 2 hours or until the beef is tender.

Cape Malay Koeksisters Recipe

Get ready to indulge in these sweet and sticky treats! Koeksisters are a popular snack in South Africa, especially in the Cape Malay community. The syrup-soaked doughnuts are crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and they are sure to delight your taste buds. Here’s what you will need:

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • 3 cups sugar for syrup
  • 1 1/2 cups water for syrup
  • 1 tsp lemon juice for syrup
  • 1 tsp rosewater for syrup

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, milk, sugar, butter, egg, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until you have a smooth dough.
  2. Roll the dough out to a thickness of about 1/2 an inch, and cut it into rectangles that are about 4 inches long and 1 inch wide.
  3. Using a sharp knife, make 3 cuts down the length of each rectangle, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  4. Twist the dough between your fingers to make a braid, then press the ends together to form a ring.
  5. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan until it reaches a temperature of about 350°F.
  6. Fry the koeksisters in batches for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  7. Remove the koeksisters from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel to drain.
  8. In a small saucepan, mix together the sugar, water, lemon juice, and rosewater to make the syrup.
  9. Bring the syrup to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
  10. Dip the koeksisters into the hot syrup, making sure that they are well coated.
  11. Allow the koeksisters to cool in the syrup for about 30 minutes before serving.
