Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 lbs stewing beef
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 green pepper, chopped
- 1 cabbage, chopped
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
- Add the onion and garlic and sauté for about 2 minutes or until the onion is soft.
- Add the green pepper and continue to sauté for another 2 minutes.
- Add the beef to the pot and cook until browned.
- Add the cabbage, beef broth, sugar, cinnamon, turmeric, salt, and pepper to the pot.
- Bring everything to a boil, then reduce the heat to low.
- Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 2 hours or until the beef is tender.
Cape Malay Koeksisters Recipe
Get ready to indulge in these sweet and sticky treats! Koeksisters are a popular snack in South Africa, especially in the Cape Malay community. The syrup-soaked doughnuts are crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and they are sure to delight your taste buds. Here’s what you will need:
Ingredients:
- 3 cups flour
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 2 cups vegetable oil for frying
- 3 cups sugar for syrup
- 1 1/2 cups water for syrup
- 1 tsp lemon juice for syrup
- 1 tsp rosewater for syrup
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, milk, sugar, butter, egg, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until you have a smooth dough.
- Roll the dough out to a thickness of about 1/2 an inch, and cut it into rectangles that are about 4 inches long and 1 inch wide.
- Using a sharp knife, make 3 cuts down the length of each rectangle, being careful not to cut all the way through.
- Twist the dough between your fingers to make a braid, then press the ends together to form a ring.
- Heat the oil in a deep frying pan until it reaches a temperature of about 350°F.
- Fry the koeksisters in batches for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
- Remove the koeksisters from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel to drain.
- In a small saucepan, mix together the sugar, water, lemon juice, and rosewater to make the syrup.
- Bring the syrup to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Dip the koeksisters into the hot syrup, making sure that they are well coated.
- Allow the koeksisters to cool in the syrup for about 30 minutes before serving.
