Clam chowder is a classic dish that is loved by many. Whether you’re enjoying it on the coast of New England or at Disneyland, it’s always a comforting and delicious meal. I recently stumbled upon a recipe for Disneyland’s famous clam chowder and couldn’t wait to try it out.
To start, preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Next, cut the top off of a sourdough bread bowl and hollow out the inside. This will be used to serve the clam chowder later on. Place the bread bowl and lid in the oven for 10 minutes to crisp up.
While the bread is toasting, heat a large pot over medium heat. Add 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter and 1 diced yellow onion. Cook until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes. Next, add 4 cloves of minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
Once the onion and garlic are fragrant, add in 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour and whisk until combined. This will create a roux that will thicken the chowder. Slowly pour in 2 cups of clam juice and 2 cups of heavy cream, whisking constantly.
Once the mixture is smooth, add in 3 (6.5 ounce) cans of minced clams, drained. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Finally, season with 1 tablespoon of dried thyme, 1 tablespoon of Old Bay seasoning, and salt and pepper to taste.
To assemble the bread bowl, ladle the clam chowder into the center of the toasted bread. Top with the lid and serve immediately. This recipe serves 4, but can easily be doubled for larger gatherings.
