When the weather gets chilly, nothing beats a warm bowl of seafood chowder. This classic New England dish is packed with rich flavors from the sea and a creamy, comforting base. Here are two recipes to try out this season:

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices thick cut bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 3 cups fish stock or clam juice
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 lb seafood (shrimp, crabmeat, clams, etc.)
  • 2 Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, cook bacon until crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.
  2. Add diced onion to the bacon fat and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  3. Add potatoes and cook for 5 more minutes.
  4. Sprinkle flour over vegetables and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Add fish stock or clam juice, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to a simmer.
  6. Simmer until potatoes are tender, 10-15 minutes.
  7. Add cream and seafood and simmer until seafood is cooked through, 5-10 minutes.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot, topped with bacon and parsley.

  • 1 1/2 lbs seafood (scallops, shrimp, cod, etc.)
  • 1 lb potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1 cup corn kernels
  • 2 Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions:

  2. Add diced onion and celery to the bacon fat and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  3. Sprinkle flour, thyme, and smoked paprika over vegetables and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  4. Add chicken broth and milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to a simmer.
  5. Add seafood, potatoes, and corn. Simmer until seafood is cooked through and potatoes are tender, 10-15 minutes.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot, topped with bacon and parsley.
